People may be upset hearing anything in general. I might be upset to hear that Graham hasn't released a new server. The selective feelings of 'hypothetical' individuals might not be the best case to judge what rules we stand to. Sure they are offensive to some people. But if this were a Catholic discord it would probably be considered offensive to talk about being gay. If enough members join that are offended by homosexuality should we then decide that talking about gay people is not allowed?

Civility is excellent (i.e. the obvious slurs) but there's a line.
True enough but why is 'f' always a negative thing? I know people that call themselves 'f' as a way of reclaiming the word and don't mind being called it in a jokey way, in much the same way some black dudes joke about the 'n' word. Also this raises the question of whether we can trust mods to be clear about judgement of context. I think a lot of people would say that is too inconsistent rn.

At the end of the day, a rule preventing the verbal harm of others should be something the overwhelming majority of people abide by. Also, who's to say said individuals are hypothetical? You're not in a position to know the complaints of others. Arguing context is also irrelevant. If someone were punished unjustly for an out-of-context statement, which has not yet happened as far as I'm aware, the moderator who delivered said punishment would be at fault and should be punished accordingly.

And here is the crux of the matter: 'Verbal harm'. I don't see any good definition of the term on which to base policy on, and the current judgement of doing so at the discretion of the moderator is prone to abuse. Lack of transparency in the complaints process is also not a selling point. I'm for banning users that are abusive to others, I just don't see how limiting a users choice of language addresses that. It is easy to verbally abuse a user without any of the above language.

most of us just use the words indirectly anyways...

the majority of people will still freely use such languages amongst friends or like minded people, but in todays society, if one person is offended about 50 other sheep get offended too

I just raised another good point with Omar. How many of us would even still be here if the current rules had applied to us? I know 10 year old me would have been banned and left. Be honest with yourselves. If the game is to grow it needs to accommodate users like ourselves ten years ago that weren't particularly mature with language.

I'm not a fan of language censorship at all, but i have seen the kinds of cesspools that develop when the edgy members let loose.
Decent discussions would get completely derailed by a fisk in a bad mood dropping n bombs etc.
Even though some people could probably benefit from developing thicker skin, i doubt they would and the sensitive members would probably leave.

One thing that I had said in Discord on the subject is that, yes, restricting the usage of the R slur might seem a bit overly PC, but from a pragmatic perspective, if we pick and choose which slurs to allow or allow them depending on certain contexts, you'll always have that lawyer, perhaps a literal one (fire cape ), arguing about the logic or enforcement of the rules—which, by the way, I'd like to note, is exactly how the rule became what it is today, shown in the screenshot posted by Mikan. One might even wonder if complaining about the slur in the first place in order to get them all banned was in preparation for a thread like this . At the end of the day, we're all unpaid volunteers and I don't want to have a daily debate over who gets to say which slur and why.

Another thing to note about the R slur is that the same thing could've been said about "autistic" or, especially, "gay" a few years back; if anything was even slightly annoying, a common way to describe it in the gaming community would be "gay" (e.g., "man, I just got killed by a noob tube, this shit's so fucking gay, bro") or if anyone was even slightly weird or a bit dumb, they'd be called "autistic" or an "autist" within minutes. Both of which seem a bit gauche in 2021, don't they?

Language evolves. Evolve with it. One word gets removed and another will get invented. You'll find new creative ways to insult each other. Losing access to the R slur isn't the end of the world. I already tried my best to distance myself from it personally over the past few years.
