Absolutely.
It is now up to the contributors to be mature enough to make sure the rank is handed out to people who deserve it.
I can't remember there being ranks on mopar (cough sorry Kevy look away) but it worked. You recognised people who knew what they were talking about anyway.
This is a low-cost respected member rank but this will encourage people to post. ++
We had tried to avoid this problem, which is the same sort of problem RM currently faces, by allowing staff to have both the ability to nominate and also the ability to confirm and deny nominations. That combined with the ability to strip inactive members I think will help us bust up the cliques and "reward" people who deserve the rank rather than let it be yet another girls' club.
Yeah I mean as soon as you slap "nominated and voted in by the group" you're basically just begging for the same circlejerk arguments the vets had for years. Assuming the forums are active for any considerable length of time this rank too will just be a popularity contest.
As for the other groups, vet requirements were just laxed to Dec. 31 2008 and both vet and RM are admin appointed groups. People like pixels but I think my main point still stands, this Contributor kind of nullifies the process of giving someone RM so if we're gonna do the whole rank shuffling shit 15 years into the forums then might as well make sense of it.
ive contributed to the majority of shit posting on this community, wheres my recognition.
This rank is definitely different than RM and vet, each one of the people awarded this rank has contributed quite a bit and continues to contribute towards the community. If they no longer contribute or go inactive for an extended period of time etc, then it is likely they would have the rank removed. Also, I believe it is reasonable for them to make nominations where it makes sense, and this seems likely to happen. This rank doesn't have nominations based off of popularity or anything like that, it is entirely about contributions.
This rank was very well thought out and planned and it's working out quite well so far and I don't see that changing any time soon. A lot of effort was put into this rank, so we aren't just going to let it fall by the wayside.
Yeah I was never equating Contributor with other ranks. Graham and I were talking about how cliquey they are and all I pointed out was that a vote-in system is going to be inherently just as clique-y as vet WAS when it was a vote-in group.
The real issue I mentioned that was never responded to is that the parameters around attaining Contributor are basically identical to those for attaining Respected Member... so how does one "contribute to the forums" to such an extent that they deserve rank recognition for it, but they somehow aren't respected enough for the Respected Member rank? This is pretty much why I suggested we all but delete the RM rank or atleast retire it, turn it into ex-staff, do whatever. Contributor supersedes RM just by it's own design.
And fwiw, activity and post-activity requirements for various ranks have always existed and yet they are so rarely ever enforced, especially not a 15 y/o forum with a decaying populous, so I don't see how this really fits into the main issue I brought up.
Vet group was entirely about your join date being 2006 and it took me 8 years to get it even if I was retarded during most of those years. The principles never really change, ranks are a popularity contest. This rank doesn't have nominations based off of popularity or anything like that, it is entirely about contributions.
You're describing exactly what the vet rank was supposed to be for years (also designer). This is literally history repeating itself, other than the promise of "it'll be different this time" I see no reason how this doesn't devolve into cliques/popularity contests/etc. provided the forums stay active enough to have a considerable amount of people with it.
It's not that the rank is a bad idea or anything it's just that it's nothing other than just a rank that will be susceptible to all the problems the other ranks face. You didn't make the perfect rank.
