Fair use for Custom RSPS Models

When it comes to customs servers creating their very own models I think it's important to be unique and not leach other servers work and the modellers work itself.


I am proposing a new rule since there is an uprise in custom RSPS servers which are mainly cash grabs with leached models which end up closing within the next few weeks and giving custom servers a bad name. If they are proven to be leaching models don't allow them to be posted in the advertising section until they have made their models.


If we can abide this rule here I believe toplists like Runelocus, RSPS-LIST will follow.

Custom servers have a bad rep because they have shit like Pikachu, miniguns and Nutella NPCs, not because they leech models.

It'd be better to get model encryption. While that doesn't guarantee your models wont be stolen, it makes it a bit harder to steal.

Let me rephrase it for you; You're not worried about the user base, you're worried other servers are profiting off of your models. Which is fine, just say it as it is. I'd be worried too.

You should make your custom models in a custom format and have your own decoders for them instead of using runescapes. That would stop a lot of people from stealing them.

I've seen people use encryption when they supply the decryption secret to the client itself, what is the point?

It would be a moderation nightmare. We are unpaid volunteers. I don't think you realize how much time it would take out of our days handling intellectual property disputes over every little advertisement thread.

What's extra ironic about this, though, is that many of these models are not ones created for Dreamscape. Often, you guys, and other servers, have models that you've paid a modeler to download from somewhere and rig, paint, and texture for RuneScape, which is very different from creating assets fully from scratch. How can we complain about model ripping while also yoinking models from various art resource sites without properly giving them credit or abiding by the licenses they were released under? Not to mention the fact that many of these models are infringing upon someone else's IP in the first place (e.g., Pikachus etc).

Also worth mentioning, we allow leaked servers to be advertised. Half the servers on the toplist would be removed if we required you to have full 100% rights over code to advertise it. And, honestly, as someone who actually does rig models for fun and for profit, I will tell you that rigging something I've downloaded is significantly less work than the thousands of hours put into leaked servers like Kratos, Matrix (667), Runite (lol) and all the other leaked bases that people use today.

Additionally, where do we draw the line when it comes to infringement? Do we punish people for using models made with leaked versions of displee's texture editor as well or do we ignore the hours put into the tools that people here have made to make servers like DreamScape possible?

i've seen a lot of dumb shit posted on this forum but this almost has to top the cake...be realistic with your suggestions man you're using stolen content and making a profit on it. I can almost guarantee your server/client are not 100% your work either..are you paying the people anything from which you've derived your server? orrrrrr doesn't only apply to instances which hurt your business particularly?

Yeah majority of websites that are out there, if you use their resources it usually gives you an html code to put at bottom for credit.

Leechers kinda help make a large part of the community. most rsps at one point or another sees an idea and tries to make their own copy, whether as models or as code. there are so many renditions of group ironman, raids, that i guarantee most of them dont credit the original creators of this, even if those making it from their own got some of the code from another. Its how private servers thrive is by sharing and disturbing software, code and yes models. Don't know where this community would be without "leeches", most people wouldnt even have a server without someone releasing a source which each have their own custom stuff in it. just my two cents.

Yeah but all those interfaces are designed using Jagex resources. Adding a string to an interface doesn't mean its copyrighted to you. As for the graphics and designs, most people gotta start somewhere.

Custom servers look bad cause they are bad.. i am in for custom but what all custom servers out there do is ugly as fk..

I am not here advertising but look at a custom 667 and see the difference. We all know wich one.

Just delete your 99% shit customs and redo them properly.. then you can moan again.

As for interface designs, we all have to start somewhere. I used to use existing assets from either runescape or other servers to get familiar with them. Slowly worked my way up to create unique ones.
If you're like me who started learning to design interfaces with existing assets, it's not a bad thing at all. But if you decide to use it as yours or just leech it straight off of other games, that's where you're in the wrong.

It's not necessarily Jagex resources, there's plenty of sprites that I created myself without using any Jagex resources (Except for the font or scrollbar obv) that I see almost everywhere.
However, I do agree with you on your second statement, everyone has to start from the bottom. As I said before, it starts being a bad thing when you claim it as yours or just leech it :p.

Ya there are several people within this community who actually take their time to produce quality interfaces, just kinda hard to find since not all of them have a thread etc :p. I Remember a guy called Keith that was doing some lit interface work back in the day, mans produced lit stuff.

Those are the people I generally and will always respect. The ones who take pride and initiative into their work. I never got into interfaces, so I can say its pretty cool what you guys can push the limits to :)

In general RSPS has come so far since 2010. Its crazy.
