I feel the place this is coming from, and I do agree that sometimes people might open multiple thread to show off things (not even talking about the fact they're not show case worth and only made to have more threads on the section), that could be because
they are even affiliated or have a link to their advertisement in their signature, thus making everyone who view the thread also view their advertisements.
However I do not think it is something that actually happens and you would have to be very strict about those kind of threads, one like you have linked here is basically just posted in the wrong section.
I'm quite neutral about this, but if it was added, it should be very describe-full on whether threads are made for advertising purposes or real show off purposes.
But I just want to show off all my custom recolored torva models .
In all seriousness, I'm sure it can be quite annoying but doesn't seem as harmful to have this rule in place.
I don't think that is really a great example because that was an incredibly obvious plug, which is why I closed it. If show off threads are made in that way then its obviously going against what the section is intended to be used for.
That is the point of affiliate though. If you buy the right to advertise and then don't, well that's kind of stupid.
The point is that the thread you closed could have been reported before it had a fair amount of views and comments. Closing the thread without modifying the original post isn't a solution either. It still exists at this time without a single modification. It's still advertising the server mentioned.
The following are examples of threads within the first few pages that have remained open.

Haha, well it doesn't have to be annoying! As it stands the majority of threads abide by this, it's only a few that don't that should be punished from the limited research I did.
Unfortunately it's quite difficult to determine whether or not something is show-off worthy. It wouldn't even have to be that well described because it's such a simple concept.
It's hard to determine what is worth showing off and what isn't. When separated it becomes less of a advertisement because at least if it's broken up, it's up to the user to click separate threads to view the set of advertisements. Whereas currently the user is forced to view a set of images that collectively advertise a game.
