Rune-Server Discord

The only negative posts here are from people who've got some special rank on the forums ;_;
I highly doubt the discord will die out. Will it become less active? Of course, the hype will wear off eventually. I don't see it dying out though. Most communities nowadays use discord, it's much easier to talk on there than to actually have rune-server open and chat in the shoutbox, discord is open by default for majority of the people. That's why I don't see it dying out, it'll most likely end up being a more active shoutbox.

the appeal to it is that message boards are dead and these things like forum software, theme, infernoshout are how we used them 10 years ago when they were still modern

not making a case against the discord, it's just that 'archaic' in this context isn't a bad thing

why have we not updated the forum in almost a half a decade if we didnt like how it looked and felt


agree with the fella kris as well too, lots of communities have moved on to discord, i run a sub that grows by 1000 every month (currently 15,879 subscriptions) and 80% of the activity for it occurs in the discord server for it

having an r-s discord is great but i wish it had become a thing before i quit group IM forever because its cancer that eats your soul

The functionality of the shoutbox is archaic, and I would argue in a bad way. It took years to even have timed bans added to it, and even now its still pretty basic. I think it no longer meets the expectations of what people want from a chat platform.
The site needs to get with the times and modernize if its to stay alive. I know that might upset some people because of all the "normies" that will be about, but to be fair the RSPS community has always been like that.

Different can of worms you're opening there though. Its not as if anyone hasn't ever suggested we change things in big ways, its just that the powers that be at the time didn't want to push for it or couldn't be bothered.
Staff spitballed a forum redesign back in October ([Only registered and activated users can see links. Click Here To Register...]) to get rid of some of the dead/redundant parts of the forum. Now that getting things like that done is plausible, we'll go for more changes.

Bout fuckin time we get a discord.

This Discord is a stupid idea. This community is already dying and you want to divide it up further via a 3rd party application? Waste of time. Having a Discord server for an organized forum with an existing live chat is like adding shit to a pile of shit. You just have more shit. It also has specific sections for the respective forum categories which is another stupid idea. We have a forum literally for this purpose, and I was in the general Discord chat for 20 fuckin minutes earlier today and I saw 5 separate users asking about RSPS help.

We no longer have to stifle discussion with Discord - if people want to ask for help with RSPS stuff then we have a channel for it, and likewise for things like the market, serious discussions, spam, etc.

The Discord retracts nothing of value from the forums and provides us with different ways to engage with the community. I get that it may be a novelty right now, but last night we were chilling with over 70 people in there, which I think goes to show that the community isn't as dead as we all like to think.

If this right here doesn't speak volumes about why we SHOULDN'T have a Discord server, idk what else to tell you. The solution to years of continued administrator neglect to the website is to say "ah fuck it, let's have a 3rd party way to do the exact same thing people do on the forums!" (admittedly we're long past the time where it'd be worthwhile to do any sort of update).

There are a ton of popular platforms that have multiple features that we'll never get with the Shoutbox or Vbulletin in general. Should we have a Rune-Server subreddit as well? Plenty more features than here!

"x platform has features we don't have here" is a terrible argument to make when you're comparing two totally different things, and I could just as easily spin your argument around to say "R-S has features that you just wouldn't get with Discord". How silly does that sound?

Except the fact that you're finding new ways to divide up the community that has continued to spiral into further and further inactivity over the last 3 years (significantly, over 5,300 active users in Nov 2014, now 3,400) alone. What we're doing is the equivalent to adding a second world to an RSPS with 30 players. You end up with two dead entities instead of one 'kinda alive' entity. I mean is this seriously above the knowledge capacity of the guy who runs this site? Lol

By the way this isn't some personal bias against Discord or whatever - Discord is a phenomenal platform but doesn't serve a purpose for Rune-Server. As somebody who basically only uses the shoutbox on this site (like a lot of us), I'm more than aware that the people who use the shoutbox are still gonna use the shoutbox anyway. That isn't gonna change much if at all.
