    Hello, have a question.. This is basic but just trying to understand.

    Question is:
    Derivate this:
    f(x)=3e^x^2+2

    So what i did was = 3e^u
    u=x^2+2
    u'=2x
    f'(x)=3e^u*u'=3*e^x^2+2*2x
    =6xe^x2+2

    Well you might think, "you solved it"? well i did but i have an issue. I dont understand why you have to multiply at this step: 3e^u*u' ... Why do you have to multiply e^u*u'? I think there's a rule for this but can't find it. If there's a rule, its understandable.

    Thanks for the help : )

    It's called the Chain Rule
    Let's say you've got a composite function f(g(x)) and you wanna differentiate it. Then the chain rule says that the derivative of f o g is

    I'd write the proof of it but it'd take me some time. The proof is pretty straightforward and you can find it on the internet (even on KhanAcademy). Here's the proof http://web.mit.edu/wwmath/calculus/d...ain-proof.html

    Also, by the way, what you're talking about is differentiation and not derivation
