So got this new modem, it should give like 300 mb/s. My external router (asus ac66u) is good enough to handle that. But when I try to test the speed wirelessly, I get the maximum upload speed but the download speed is like 20 mb/s while it should be at least 10x more.

Anyone knows what the problem might be?

The wireless card could probably do with an upgrade as it's trying to handle so much more speed wirelessly. I'm not sure on that at all, just taking a guess and trying to help! I always connect via ethernet for epic speed.

How far away are you from the router?

Even when I am like 20cm away from the router with my iphone, it still gives the very limited download speed but the maximum upload

Try login to your router and set the wifi speeds to the highest they'll go and restart it

also try changing the wireless frequency to 5ghz and again restart the router

I honestly think that the wireless card is the issue, if it's also happening with your iPhone it just answers your question buddy. Like 802.11ac for example, on the specs of iPhones.

The same way your computer has a certain capacity it can handle. However it still confuses me as to why the upload is fast and your download is the same as it was. You could change the wifi speeds to the highest they'll go and restart it in the router settings maybe.

    Hope you get sorted buddy!

Come on it's gotta be the wireless card, right? Also who uses modem and router, aren't they all bundled nowadays with the router?

Sounds like an issue with the modem if it was working before you replaced it, either call a technician out to have a look, hold the reset button, check a cable isn't damaged or get a replacement modem.
