I would say again the big factor is marketing, with Kotlin being pushed by Google and Jetbrains. When did Intellij start to pickup? Everyone used to use Eclipse and Netbeans was the laughing stock. Don't get me wrong, any tech with big commercial backers is going to be good. Obviously that's what happens when you have paid professionals, but there is definitely a risk that this technology becomes all about the 'latest buzz' for the software industry rather than actual practicality and efficiency. Gradle for me is too contingent, I worry if my builds will even work in a few years or if Google will just adopt whatever is fashionable then.
Anyway have fun at work.
