    It's such a shame, because the frontend design and overall concept is great, however, I'd be hesitant to actually use the current implementation of the backend API in any production environment.

    No, because if the request fails, the items are still deleted - great UX. Furthermore, due to the nature of asynchrony, if you verify --> delete --> hit the API --> fail --> return items, the state of the player may have changed in a manner that no longer facilitates returning their items, i.e., they've logged out, their inventory is full, etc.
