This is NOT something that I should be showing off, first off, because it is illegal, but also because it's buggy, not finished, etcetera...
    It's just some basic idea.

I managed to get a private server up and running private/publicly. The first time in several years in fact.
I believe this was the first time not using Hamachi.
    Private network, then public internet.
This was also the first time that I have done this by myself (almost entirely). I had done attempts of cross referencing guides, etcetera... but still.
This may have been the first time doing this publicly on my own.
This has been a nice refresher on the topic of port-forwarding a router.

This is a later image, prior to posting, same evening. This is not a shot of it working for the first time in so long, the screenshot idea came later on. I'm just happy I got it working.

    Attached image

Now I can do this enough times for familiarity!

I consider this a MAJOR accomplishment, because back in the day, I couldn't really do this.
In fact, to this day, there isn't a single video out on YouTube explaining a general tour or a guide on how to do this for the specific router I had. Other videos will fit, but it's not a good general directory/"go to".

The other is that they would try and teach you how to get it up, but not instruct on how to take it down. This obviously raising concerns on my end.

I couldn't really mess around too much back then either. Reason being is because we got internet late. This was back when DSL was still a huge thing. Getting internet was a huge accomplishment. It was sensitive too. It would go out, it wasn't configured right, etcetera... Getting Wi-Fi was another accomplishment. Things not being configured correctly, etcetera...

I still don't know/understand all of the details on how this, ISP, internet public IP, etcetera... works, though I still consider it something.

If anyone else can relate/enjoy, feel free to.

bro why didn't you read my portforwarding guide from 2008? any router, with or without password - port forward with uTorrent: https://www.rune-server.ee/runescape...orwarding.html in 2 minutes!!

a few years late, but congrats!

Torrenting had a shady/sketchy thing back in the day.

This is also the first time seeing/hearing about this.

Also, it would probably be a good idea to add pictures to your guide.

holy shit this post is golden. My first account on this site was created in march 2009. You have absolutely NOTHING to worry about regarding making, experimenting, and developing rs private servers. Fuck jagex. Welcome! Although this community isn't nearly as big or as popular nowadays as it was years ago, welcome. Keep working and updating us

edit: I should add that for the record, Jagex was even allowing private servers like Soulsplit to continue running as long as they paid jagex a majority they made from donations and ads and still the owner of soulsplit was probably bringing in close to half a mill to 1 million+ gross revenue from running their server. Shit got so big that they even had a youtube channel and copied jagex's update diaries series and did videos of the devs at their desks.

A private server. Let that sink in.

    I doubt that tbh

I'm not sure if I will ever be finished making a post in response to that.
I'm trying to post/explain my entire RS-RSPS history.

If I do, it will take some time.
I'm hoping there aren't too many errors.
    It's already a mess.
I can't remember everything, things are out of order, etcetera...

I was a administrator back on SS back in the day, this was most definitely not happening lol.

I had an account ages ago I think asking in shoutbox about/for a Unique-Ends/Endz source/client, etcetera...
I can't remember where that left off.
I don't know the name of it, etcetera...
I've been through a lot though, so I haven't been able to keep a concurrency as much/well as others may/might have. (parents getting divorced, moving houses multiple times, new computers, changing computers, XP to Vista to 7 to 8, changing ISPs, etcetera... )

I first started/entered the RSPS scene back when FrugooScape came out. I caught wind of it. My cousin, I, and my brother all played. I remember struggling with the
    Code:
    ::pickup
    command.
It was a really amazing/thrilling different experience. It had the old graphics too. Which was nice. Really nice. That was actually the primary reason for playing/joining. (the old RuneScape)
As I recall, we got bored of FrugooScape pretty quick.

I can't remember what happened here. Off the top of my head, I think when it shut down, we went back to RS.

I was still interested in private servers though, at the time, they seem to have been booming/hanging out/around quite a bit.
I can't remember what happened here. I eventually came across a YouTube video that used Ddsspeced and Project Fubergen (I believe). I may have been indirectly corned into downloading/using these (I can't remember). It may have been the case that I was just looking into options/what other people had done, the graphics, memories, keep things legal (I don't know) etcetera...

I eventually downloaded Ddsspeced and Project Fubergen.
I didn't even know what I was doing. I think at the time I was so determined to get FrugooScape or something like it up and/or back and running that I was willing to take risks, go lengths, etcetera... This was back on my mom's brand new shiny computer that ran Windows Vista at the time too, so it was super sketchy/shady/dangerous feeling. This was actually back when people were still on edge over/on the whole 32 and 64-bit thing. I had never done/run anything of or like command prompt/command line/Terminal, etcetera... back then. Let alone even run a program through command line.
I recall my mom catching wind of what was going on, and recall her screaming something like/along the lines of, "If you touch/break that/my computer!...) etcetera... so I mean this was huge.
Getting something to appear on screen after doing that was still really huge. I wasn't sure if it was going to break my computer, etcetera...
I even did weird stuff like run both the server, and the client, but then when I logged in, I was on someone else's live server, confused, etcetera...

Sometime after this, I eventually bought my very first computer, a laptop for $50.
    A Compaq Presario 700.
That's right, I get to say my first personal computer was one that ran a GUI OS (pretty nice in my opinion, XP being famous too, etcetera... )

I eventually found out that I could basically almost pretty much kind of play RuneScape offline, and this was a huge hit. I thought it had to be connected to the internet in some way or something.
So I ran offline, and that was huge.

I didn't really know what I was doing. The full details anyway.
Eventually it reached the idea of customizing/editing, etcetera...
I didn't get much further than that because of the construct of the poor compiler interfering with the construct of the Windows XP operating system. Also other things such as not knowing how to program/what to enter, what the proper coding/programming and compiling process was, etcetera...
I also feel this is where the core of the RS-RSPS (the core batch of people) community is at (or atleast was at the time) I still think is here to this day. They can run, but they can't compile, make, edit, modify, etcetera... (As of to date, this is basically where I still consider myself, or maybe a little past this. I have some experience, but nothing too considerable. )

I can't remember what happened at or around this point.
I don't think the whole making or editing a RSPS went anywhere at this point.

I played on the Rune-Life server while it was there, up and running.
I think I just followed other people around curiously, etcetera... wondering how to make the game, how they also managed to do this, etcetera...

I don't think I got back onto a live server until much later. It was nice that this was free too.

My brother caught wind of RitzScape, and I soon followed. Then eventually LightScape.
LightScape was really cool, and a really nice experience. Shout out to Light4Speed if you're still there/reading this (doubt it, but still).

Somewhere, quite a ways after, I think we got a new computer that ran Windows 7 at this point, and that was a nice experience. It was really fast.

I think we went back to RS again. I think it was because LightScape didn't feel like an investment. I can't remember exactly.
We kept getting shambles of the RuneScape experience. Servers shut down, we'd lose our time sunk/invested, etcetera...

RuneScape was always going to be the "go to" reference. I think it was also that we didn't know where we were. Like, I knew we were here, but I didn't know/didn't follow because I didn't know where to go, or where everyone was at. I knew people had atleast reached the stage of RSPS, but further than that I'm not too aware of.

We stood with RS for a while as well.
    Watched NightmareRH videos, etcetera...

It wouldn't be until a lot later that I got more experience, though not Java (yet).

I had a really shit rat ass looking teacher for my first programming class instructor back in high school that couldn't/didn't teach well for worth of fucking shit. I worked with Visual Basic and some C++. (I can't even remember how to program or make stuff in these applications anymore. )

I can't really remember what happened at this point, and the order that things happened.

RevolutionX came to our attention, and with RSPS familiarity, and that literally felt like a reset.

Eventually EoC came out, but I think everyone had already left or tried to leave at that point (again...) .
I think people were so done with the game at the time that it didn't matter as much, but still.

I eventually took a two year course class on some dedicated web design/html experience.
-This was more lobbyist bureaucracy horse shit than it was something that actually went somewhere.
You could make a web page using over advanced gear/programs, and fill it with lobbyist no one gives a fuck fill. You would literally not see the point. You would basically perform the work, but not see a reason/good enough reason to do it.

Time passed, I kept asking about/for Java/Java Script experience in school, I even went to the lengths of printing off (I think some bot script, I can't remember exactly ) something stupid crazy huge at the time. I couldn't even remember how long it was. I practiced re-writing for familiarity. I think the imports alone were like atleast an entire page. I mean I was really set on getting this/that experience.
I think at this point it would have been good to have better insight.

Eventually I got a Java programming class at a technology center. Unfortunately, that was also more garbage than it was helpful. More of the get back to work, the information isn't going in right, the instructor teaches more languages than they can help, there's constant interruptions, there's english and math courses thrown into the same course for some fucking reason, things not being explained well, the instructor gets busy helping someone else, the book doesn't even mention which Java version it uses, it doesn't teach command line until it reaches GUI, it doesn't even teach you how to make a fucking .jar file, how to use command line flags, how to make a compiler, they throw you in an eclipse IDE too soon, things are taught too fast/quickly, it's unnatural as fuck, etcetera... I mean you could literally just keep going on and on and on and on about this. There is more negative/bad to it than there is positive. It was better, but still awful. This isn't even RS anymore, I mean, this is/was/still is really fucking bad. I can not express this enough.
I did not learn something as basic as how to compile for subset directories until this year/last year, after the deliberate dedicated class course.
(I think this was partially being done so they could/can keep a horse shit lock down on their "investments/knowledge", etcetera... )
Same programming book that they use at the local community college I was possibly looking into at the time.
Second year of this programming class/course was pretty good. I actually met newcomers, and even one of them on this site!

    OSRS released prior.

Some horse shit ProjectRS06 occurred prior. Unfortunately, they shut down, not only that, they did hack or try and hack the accounts with the usernames and passwords of the OSRS accounts.

Eventually, a considerable amount of time after that I was able to use my experience that I got from the Java programming class with a deliberate dedicated IDE, BlueJ to edit, and run a private server (offline of course). This was a huge major milestone. I could actually take what I had learned in school, the smallest slightest thing, and apply it here. That's actually what I did. All I did was this really small bit, a simple output message, something along the lines of "System.out.println("test")" etcetera... I saw what I had done and was thrilled/amazed. To see it work. To see anything work. I actually got the experience I was looking for. Unfortunately, read prior, even with this much of a micro success, I, as well as many others, are a very far distance away from more core RSPS functionality. We can do basic things, but going too far beyond that usually results in some always angry negative socialist nazi dictator response on something as simple as asking a basic question. We are literally talking about this much experience just to climb all the way up here, and then be shot in the face over it, being told you can't go any farther.

I'm leaving a whole bunch out. I wish I wasn't, and remembered more, and in the correct/proper order.

Also, for others reading, do not let this post discourage you from learning Java/making Java programs. Things have gotten better over the years (Not everything, but still. ). We have the computers/technology that we didn't have back then, and some to spare! You can literally pick up a garbage laptop for programming, with WiFi capabilities built in, older networking equipment is much cheaper, etcetera...
Higher quality videos for informative viewing purposes, things/understandings have gotten around a lot more, more examples are easily accessible, more resources are available, etcetera...

One other thing I was not taught in school that I think would be beneficial for others to understand is on the topic of books. Specifically programming books.
My computer back then, and still today, most computers actually don't come with a programming book. They haven't for a while.
Despite a JRE and JDK version being a finite binary amount in size, it is still unfortunately similar to other books, such as math, language, history, etcetera... These three being that there isn't a single book that covers literally every single thing on the subject. There isn't a book for every possible math problem/formula, etcetera... There isn't a book for all of history. There isn't a book for all languages.
This unfortunately does look like/to be the same for programming as well. This meaning, you may have to find a good book, multiple books, or a series of books. Some books have examples other books don't - I believe for copyright concerns. Yes, that's right, even your/a book has copyright concerns for learning examples (pretty ridiculous, there's not much that can be done). You may have to find a dedicated book on the subset subject matter. For example, graphics and networking.
Also consider buying a decent used book if necessary.
