    Hello everyone,

So I remember trying to make my very first rsps a few years ago, and all I did back then was change locations, add npcs, bosses, objects and all that nonsense.
However now a few years later I am really looking to get started with developing the game.
I have been trying to watch tutorials of game development in Java, and although I can create a game following a tutorial I don't actually learn something. Hence why I make this thread.
I hope some experienced developers can give me some information to get started.
Copying a code works, but it only gets you so far, I want to know exactly what I am filling in when I'm working on my rsps. Is there a way to learn this? for free ;P

So long story short, I want to ACTUALLY know how to make my very own rsps, no copy paste work.

    Thank you in advance.

    Danny

Forget the whole game-development bit for a while, learn just plain old java.

Types, classes, variables, methods & objects.

No need to pay, there's plenty of free content online, blank IDE project & try everything you can find.

If you get errors, read them, if you get stuck, take a break.

Thank you guys for your replies, this helped more than you can imagine, because I had no idea where to begin.

i can help you set up elvarg or something if you do need a hand pm me!
Hey, thanks for the offer. I actually managed to get elvarg running in eclipse, but to be fair, that's as far as I got.
I had trouble even locating files I had to use for certain things, let alone actually changing stuff in the files.
I am too inexperienced with java, however java/developing really got my interest and I hope to be able to create my own original rsps sooner or later.
I have a bunch of ideas for it!

My best advice is to just read the code and try to understand what the code means. Learn what the different methods are doing. Start by exploring a base, look at similar codes of what you are trying to do and then do it all by yourself.
    Spoiler for big sig:

Hey, thats a great idea as well. Can you give me the main files that I'll be using while coding my rsps? Client.java for example. That way I know which to look into

Clientsided its probably Client.java and all the defs like Itemdef.java

Serversided its probably Commands class, player class and basically all the handling for inventory, buttonhandling, objecthandling and so on

Go to the download section, find a source you like, explore it and try to set it up
    Spoiler for big sig:
