1. Explanation
About a month ago our team decided to embark upon a new concept to the RSPS community. What we realized is… Never in existence has there been one single source where players can safely & easily download & play RSPS. For far too long, players have been forced to scour forum threads & toplists to find the latest servers. Once you find a server you think you might like you still have to track down the download. If you don’t like that server, then you have to worry about deleting all of the files & pray there are no viruses left behind. Our goal at RuneList is to provide an ever-evolving platform where the RSPS community can come together over everything RSPS. So we decided it’s time to take things to the next level. After weeks of development we are proud to present:

Reduce the chances of viruses with a protective system that constantly scans all server updates before they hit your computer.

RSPS Launcher checks for server updates every 5 minutes to ensure you are always playing the most current version.

I've had years of experience with this.. and I know it's not very platform-dependent. I wrote a custom Text DSL and many backend systems, but the further I got into development, the more I realized I just wasn't happy with the speed performance, the look, and how messy the codebase was getting. I was doing the styles 'CSS' with JSON which is not ideal. I went to bed feeling defeated and very demotivated. Later on, when I was reading up on potentially using something like React… a lightBulb went off to use JavaFX. I quickly got out of bed and started the rough concept in JavaFX, then I showed the rest of the team. They loved the new look and direction! At this point, I knew I was sticking with this. I started to clean up the concept code and within a few days, I had it working (slowly). The next week was spent doing the back-end and a build tool that will automatically update and build the changelog with a click of the button. The biggest challenges by far have been optimization and making sure everything is fast and in sync with the other servers' clients and player counts.”

As of right now, RuneList RSPS Launcher is currently in the ALPHA stage. This means we are currently undergoing closed testing for staff & prestigious community members. Personally, i find this project pointless.
I dont see why this would ever be of use when there are much more accessible toplist websites rather than a desktop application.
Also on the question of security, you will not be providing your own client for each server listed on this launcher but instead will be redirecting users to download clients provided by the servers themselves, so when you say once you are done with the server you will have to delete files and worry about no virus's, it will be the exact same thing here. You mention virus protection but it just seems like a bunch of malarky as you'll use virustotal api or smthn. Stuff still slips through the cracks. A lot of people have had this idea in the past, even myself but it never made sense in my head to go through with it.
Just seems like another marketing ploy to funnel some money in through another toplist as you mentioned, featured spots will be sold and im sure they will be individual to your website toplist.
Live player count? not sure how you'll do that unless you're running a headless client on each server or ask the servers to indidually provide some sort of url that lists their total playercount.
Checking for updates every 5 minutes, are you sure there's not a better way to do that? :D

There's a lot of reasons to create a project like this one. I'm going to go over them all down below.

First of all, it is much more convenient to just use one platform to get access to the majority of games. That is also the reason why other platforms such as Steam, Epic Games Store, etc. are very popular. Sure you can visit the website of that direct game, but you can also just do it all through the launcher. Keep in mind that we aren't trying to stop people from using websites, or use toplists to find the RSPS they want. We are just offering an alternative. On top of that, we are also planning on adding e.g. a login system, social features, and a leveling system. This means that like other systems such as Playstation, Xbox, Steam, etc. players will be able to compete against each other to see e.g. who has played most RSPS, who has gotten the highest total levels across all rsps's, etc.

Secondly, we are already at a stable point when it comes to fundings. The only reason we would be offering feature spots on the launcher is that it grants additional traction to other communities. Be aware that if we were to do everything for free, we would be down in debt really quickly. You can really say the same thing for anything. Why is Rune-Server taking charge of Affiliate rank? Why do you have to pay for Youtube Premium, Netflix or Spotify, etc?

Finally, a server that’s added to the launcher will be screened for viruses. If there’s something wrong the file will get deleted and a warning will be sent to the staff. If a server updates their client the same steps will occur. We will also be checking servers manually from time to time. Only authorized staff members can add servers, so we control which servers are accepted and which are not. With that being said, we are trying to keep the quality as high as possible.

We are open to any type of feedback. If you have any ideas, suggestions, or thoughts that can improve our launcher, feel free to share them. However, e don't have an endless amount of knowledge or money. If we would be able to create a Fort Knox, we would do so. Sadly, that is not the case.

For sure! We have actually been discussing this project for a very long time, and some of the points he has brought up have crossed our minds once or twice. If we manage to come to a solution, we will make sure to share it with the rest of the community as an update!

good luck with this, reminds me of my project I did back in 2012 - stopped because of the potential of malicious servers out there, due to mine working off scraping rune-server, runelocus & top100arena.

Very cool idea. I agree with others that malware could be a potential issue, but as long as there is a thorough process for checking submissions for malware, I think it has really good potential.

Def a good upgrade to all RSPS which includes capitalism. I totally agree that we can make it have multiple servers listed as rows with their banners, and with one click it would download the client and launch it automatically.
This will allow players to play multiple servers at the same time.

I would start off by only allowing servers to join those with at least 150 average players online or more, and you list them based on their player count.
I would make it so it's mandatory to make the official and ONLY client download link to the launcher, otherwise, if they caught cheating they will get banned and removed.

I will join once its all done and some images are released! Good job on it once again!

Some very kind words. The initial aim is to get popular servers to join, e.g. Alora, Velheim, etc. instead of searching for servers as zilliziumPKzZZ317/NEED STAFF*new rsps!*!. Less risk for drama and problems and players are generally more inclined to play servers that have been around for a while and have built up a good reputation. We are also aware that there is a community built around the use of macroing/third-party software, and we will not allow them to be used in any shape or form with our launcher. Getting a 99 without doing anything is already bad, and getting achievements or any type of progress on your RuneList account is... Well a little too much :eyes:

Let us just say that we are very excited! We truly believe that we can bring a lot of people together through this project!

We allow for all types of servers. However, you will be able to use a filter. So if you don't like custom servers, you can simply filter them out!

It's a great idea.

Currently focused on the website homepage. We will resume launcher development by the end of this week, or starting next week.

This is insane. As an avid RSPS player it's a must to protect yourself from being targeted by servers that have wrong intentions. Using this client would be great to avoid downloading virusses. Along with protection the features that comes with this client are very useful aswell. Thanks RuneList! ❤️

Looks very interesting & a big QoL for any frequent RSPS player. My only concern is how you will handle the security part. I'm assuming some sort of verification process will be required to be put on your launcher but how will you handle a server containing potential malware afterwards?

What is the difference between using a launcher to get a client, or using a website to get a client? If a server contains malware, you're going to get it regardless of the medium. We take precautions before accepting a server by looking into the staff team's validity, the reliability of it not having any issues/malware, and the practicality of adding the server (e.g. is it worth it?). But at the end of the day, if a server that has been around for ages with a trustworthy team contains malware that doesn't show up on a virus scan or doesn't have any indication of containing it, there's not much we can do.

There will be three categories we account for when choosing servers. They will be highlighted on the website so the members know they can have a safe experience ✅

1. Validity: How long has the server existed? Who are the people behind the game? What experiences have they shown? Is their overall reputation positive, negative, or neutral across various communities?
2. Reliability: How reliable is it? What are the chances of it containing malware in the present/future? Are there previous records of it containing malware, database leaks, etc?
3. Practicality: Is it worth adding the server? How many players are and would be playing it? What is the expected lifetime?

In addition, we will also play-test each server that is being added in order to ensure that we can guarantee a top-notch experience. It should be right to be added to the launcher, to increase server traffic and overall player happiness rather than something everyone does to get a player or two.

We understand that saying/writing is one thing, and actually delivering on your promises is a different story. However, we aren't known for selling lies. In addition, we hope that through this journey we will be able to convince the members of Rune-Server to give our launcher a shot.

More of a question for the staff; since this is essentially going to be similar to another toplist, will rune-server allow OP to promote this since? You know, conflict of interest with rune-server's toplist? lol

We have an outside community with a top list, etc. on another thread in the [Only registered and activated users can see links. Click Here To Register...] section. The purpose of this thread is not to advertise our community, but to give the Rune-Server community insight into our development for the launcher. From what I can tell, it should be allowed.

Seems like a cool concept, but at the same time don't really see it being a success, but ay maybe it'll be the next big thing so goodluck regardless with the project would be interesting to see it work out!

not bad hope this goes well as a lot would benefit from this.
