debug the attackNPC method and followNPC

Well the source I started working on has the following issues with NPC combat (I'm guessing it has something to do with clipping).
Issue:
Unable to use Safespots with Ranging/Mage, I increased the 'gooddistance' thing in combat, but basically you can go to any well-known safespot IE. Tzhaars, and you run right up to the NPC instead of using the safespot to your advantage.
Issue 2:
When attacking NPCs if they walk under you or walk away it stops the combat and you have to try again, sometimes this will happen 2-3 times when you are trying to attack.
If someone could point me in the right direction it would be appreciated.
