I have just over a year of Java programming under my belt, but I want to try making a good private server.

Where should I begin? I've been looking through the tutorials section and can't seem to find anything that explains how to start from the beginning.

    Thanks,
    -Nate

You should try and find a source and base.
So go to the Downloads section. After that you can look into the .java files and learn from there.. i'm very inexperienced when it comes to RSPS development but you should start by getting a Base + source + client.

Hey Nate, Like shawn said, find a good source a clean one would be perfect!
Delta and Pi are both very easy to work with.
How i started for example was with a source (not clean)
it said welcome to Tehnoob scape and i just used the search button in my source and it showd me where it was located.
i kept doing it with every name i wanted to change and after a while you know in what file you need to be to edit a certain thing
for bigger coding i just followed tutorials and by following them you start learning stuff automatic a good thing is that you have java experience so it shouldn't be to hard to get started!
    Good luck

    example:

when i started i searched for example:
welcome to runetown. then it shows you the location where the code line is, just go to the location and press ctrl+f and typ in welcome to
you can also start looking in the file and you will see things you can edit.
client.java contains alot of info that has to do with the game.
Also use notepad++ makes the coding easy its better organized.

I highly recommend using Eclipse for coding, but I'm sure you probably already are since you're a java programmer. Just find something you want to do and search around in the code for similar methods and code. Like make a custom minigame and follow code off another minigame. Reading tutorials can be pretty helpful as well since there are many folders within the project, and many .java files you need to edit. Good Luck!

Most of the methods you find will be self-explanatory, like sendMessage sends a message. Just take a tour around a server.

    No, use an IDE (eclipse)

now a clean base is something like
Shards Revolution, RuneSource, rs2hd, hyperion etc

Use an IDE like everyone else suggested and use either Apollo or Hyperion
