Could someone please tell me the advantages using an update server for things such as downloading the cache to your client and so on?
You mean like when u run client it auto updates etc?
Well I would say the only advantage is that players dont have to wait for the cache to download or download a client as with an up[date server the cache streams to the where the cachedir tells it to. For an example look at bspk
If done correctly the update server would only send the data the player needs. Like in Runescape, you only download the additional files on demand (When they are needed), thus saving time and bandwidth. As opposed to World of Warcraft where you need to download every file for the patch before you can play (I'm not sure if that is still true )
Saves the players time, So don't got to do anything.
EXAMPLE: Putting cache into C://
JAGeX only has to upload their new updated cache to the update server. That's why we always gotta refresh the runescape page when the system updated.
What we basically do is push the file 255 (CRC32?) to the update server so we can skip it.
How would you even begin to setting an update server up?
(not using hyperion...)
Saves time so your players don't have to download it so it just updates it..
