We don't ask for donations, it's simply an option that we provide to those who wish to support the project. You're right though, we don't offer benefits for donating. That not only goes against the point of a donation, but also goes against the ideology of the entire project. We offer recognition for our supporters by giving them a donator title, which I think is fair.
Yes, we used the Google Cloud free trial a few times. Why not take advantage of a good free VPS? I think it'd be unwise not to do so. However, that said, we've now switched to a more permanent hosting over at OVH. Not like it matters, though.
