using the words 'runescape' or 'jagex' in your open source projects

You have a risk of getting shut down no matter what name you use.

I could imagine using runescape as the name giving even more of a risk considering
Jagex has copyright over it

no you can run an open source project about anything and not have a risk if you do things confining to the laws as much as you can.

They still have copyright over the name Runescape.. So it won't be confining to the laws if you use that name.

You can't copyright a name...

They do, however, have trademarks on the names RuneScape, Jagex, etc.

Probably, look at companies like Netscape. I expect 'scape' on its own is probably too generic to be protected by trademark law.

I believe there's alot of trademarks with the word "scape" in it, just off the top of my head: "Netscape"
