Ok well now that Gliomaru is gone, I'm here to pick up from where he left.
In this tutorial you will learn how to create an elemental sprite. But you can use these techniques to create other forms of magic sprites.

First things first, you will need one of these programs:

    -Paint
    -Graphics Gale
    -Adobe Photoshop (CS2/CS3)

I would highly recommend graphics gale, as you learn more on how to create your own effects, and it is the most ideal for creating sprites. But if you want to use photoshop, or paint, I'm not holding you back.

You can download graphics gale here

Ok, now I will post pictures later, but for now I will just write the basic steps, then finish off the rest later. Lets get started shall we.

NOTE: The parts in red, are showing you where or what is happening.

Alrighty, now, think of what sprite you want to make. In this tutorial we will be focusing on a basic magic icon. The magic icon will be a wave spell. Preferably air wave. To get started find the air wave sprite, and open it up with photoshop, paint or graphics gale. I'm not too sure of the dimensions now, but I will get them later. What you want to do, is have a look at my air wave. Now tell me what you see. Glio rated this as a perfect air wave which beat his air wave. I used a different form of creating this sprite, which is a bit more advanced than just using a gradient. But we all have different opinions. So...what do you see, look at it for 5 minutes, and then erase everything on the one you editted.

Take out a 1 pixel pencil, zoom right in. If paint, go 8x, graphics gale, 2000, photoshop 1600. This will provide you more freedom and it's about 100x times more easier to make the sprite. Now with the 1 px pencil, draw about 20 designs, and pick whichever one you think is the best. What you want to look for is a good structure, and a good representation of the wave spell. But, make the sprite fat at first, and make sure it has a tail at the end of it.

Now that you have your chosen design, take a light grey and chose your light source. Preferably for the wave sprite, the lightest part would be right at the head.

Start with the light grey going right across the tip of the head, and do another line of it.
Now, open up the colour choser. You do this by double clicking the colour palete you have chosen.

Pick a colour, slightly darker than the previous colour. And repeat the last few steps.

Keep repeating those steps. until you're close to the start of the tail. What you want to do now, is keep that colour you have right now, and make a border on the inside of the tail.

Go right to the tip of the tail, and get a slightly darker colour, and colour a few pixels around the tip fo the tail.

Gradually get lighter as your work your way back up the tail, and then you should have the basic wave form.

Now, it's time to learn a technique that was taught to me. Which is called trimming. (No, not the scams on runescape ). Trimming will get the sprite ready to be transformed. You can use trimming if you feel the sprite is too fat. But in this case, trimming is best used for a form of energy. Since the sprite is fat, I will show you how to make it look more like a wave.

What you do, is get a 1 px brush, and start going around the outside of the sprite, to make it more slim. Like this:

Always keep your fingers on the Ctrl + Z combination, to undo any mistakes you make.
Now that you have trimmed it, erase around the middle of it. Like this:

This will give you room to create more of the sprite. Now since the wave has energy in it. You want room to have another one more tail, which will curve over one tail.
    Example:

Now just create a border to guide you where you will create the second tail. And then find the colour which is closest to the start of that second tail, and fill in one line of colour.

And keep repeating the steps which ask you to make it lighter and lighter, until you hit the tail, in which you will make the end of it darker. THe steps are the underlined bits.
Now, you should be making some progress and be near finishing.

Finally, you should add any extras to the sprite which you feel is necessary.

And that's how to create a magic sprite. Remember, these techniques can be used to create other magic sprites, but you need to be a bit more creative to do so. Enjoy for now, and I will upload the pictures in a few hours.

Yeah, well it pretty much makes no difference with or without the free version. As long as you can draw, zoom, erase, and have a variety of colours.
