Thread: Make Gliomaru-Style Sprites

I'm bumping this old thread because people have been asking me to make a TUT on sprite making, but I made one already! Omgosh right? Here it is, I brought it back to life. Those of you who asked me for a sprite tut, enjoy ey? I made this when I was pretty ticked off at all the leechers and it was directed at them, dont mind all the smartass comments and all that just follow the tut. =]

These are all spell sprites that I created ages ago for my ClanServer client, (G) Source Evolution. They were used with AuRaGoD's Aura Evolution mod, a massive mod with new exotic spells that made our server truely fun.
But allong came a few dedicated people, and from screenshots of my old site, they managed to hi-jack these sprites.

I know I don't post much, I float around here and there, and work to restore glory to my clan. But every time I see somebody
post a new client, I always see them. The sprites I never released. Mis-Used, de-aranged, slightly altered.
A few with the colors changed. Whooptie-Flipping-Doo.

Starting with the "Special" Spells of our server. I see these used as side-Icons, Head-Icons, Back-Scratching Stickers
WHATEVER but I see them in almost every new client release. People changed the colors and tend to call them thiers.
Good job, I give congrats to your artistic abilitys in doing so.
90% of you will find these quite familiar. I made these ages ago and I never released any of them.


And these are the standard Aura Evolution spells. I also see these in your clients with colors changed and other slight
changes. Good job, by taking these and editing them, you became artists. *Claps* Forget about making our OWN sprites,
all we have to do is edit gliomaru's and we have new sprites of our very own!! YAY!!! Who cares about stupid creativity.


People, would it kill you guys to .... be Creative? You know, make your own sprites instead of recycling mine till the
cows come home? Just immagine the possibilitys!! These spells are OLD!!! The new ones I made look 900% better! But did
I release them? No? Why Not? Because the old ones were stolen before I released them today?
Besides, the new spells would be NO FUN for you guys, because they are so detailed that editing them would be hard.

Aside from the topic,
I realize now that I made the custom prayers to big for pixelgrabber to handel. Ops.
I will be releasing a fixed pack of prayers that " FIT " with your clients, don't worry about it.
I seen the ones you guys tryed to scale down, oh dear god.
Enjoy the spell sprites in the meantime.

I only posted this because its ENOUGH. Its REDICULOUS to see HOW MANY of you are using it.
Every new client. Always the sprites I never released. Get creative, make your own spells. Its not that hard.
MS Paint. Zoom x8. Pencil. Color Scale. Brain. Draw. Quit re-using my sprites over and over and over and over again.

The word.

C R E A T I V E .

Of cource you can use sprites that I release. But these ones I never released and they are OVER USED. So its time
to use the gift god gave each and every one of you. Fingers, Brain, Eyes.

It's time to start making sprites like gliomaru does!! Then we can stop using his leeched sprites!! YAY!!!
Lets get started.



REQUIREMENTS:

#1. You must be human. If you are a chimp you may not be able to do this.
#2. You must have a computer. But if you already leeched from me, you obviously have one. Moving right along.
#3. You must have a fully funtioning brain. If it is half-off, drink some coffie, or stop staying up so late leeching.
#4. A program called MS PAINT. If your computer don't have it... well, um. Don't do drugs. Stay in school. Don't leech.
#5. Fingers. Have at least a few of them.


DIFFICULTY:

The more creative you are, the more difficult your sprites will be to do. Trust me on this. If you are a simpleton,
you can make a happy-face sprite and it will be so easy.

I will be demonstrating how to do a standard sprite in this tutorial. This is not the actual size for spell sprites
to be used in runescape - it is demonstration only.

First thing you do is have a subject. Lets start with runescape. I just leeched this ice-barrage sprite from
gliomaru for a spell called Ice-Blitz. But it don't feel right. I want to make my own.


[Step 1]
Have an image in mind of what it will look like. I can picture a small dude casting ice.
Load MS Paint. Select the pencil tool.

[Step 2]
The sketch. What is it GOING to look like? Do I need a posture? Mabye huh?
Mabye I will make a sprite of a dude getting blasted with ice from behind!

[Step 3]
Zoom. Select the magnification tool and zoom into 8x.

Now it is way easier to sketch and plan out, what will your sprite look like?
Remember: We are working small. These are for runescape. 8x magnification is nothing other then perfect.

TIP:

Be aware of the dimention limmit. When I work with Auragate, I can set the dimention limmit. However others can not.
When a sprite is bigger then the dimention limmit, some of the sprite gets cut off when it is loaded into the client.
Be aware of the limmit and work inside of that limmit.

Sometimes it helps to draw a box the size of your dimention limmit and work within it.

[Step 4]

Are you satisfied with your sketch? Remember: This is only the SHAPE of your sprite. The scribble indicates the area you are going to draw and carve out.


[Step 5]

Carve and remove. All of runescape's sprites have one thing in common, they have a thin black border.
This can be acheived by making sure that pixes are only connected by the edges.

Notice how the proper line's pixels are only connected by their edges.


Notice how the improper line's pixels are connected by thier faces, making the line fatter and sloppy.


This is also called trimming. Once the sketch looks good to you, its time to trim it and prepare for color and
details.
Trimming is done by right-clicking with the pencil tool and going over the un-wanted black
areas with white, and vise-versa to add black back in.
Once trimmed, our sketch looks like this: Ready for color and details.


The hard part. Above was the easy part. Thanks to today's computers there are way easier ways of doing this
including photoshop which I now use. But I am showing how all of these leeched spell sprites were made, and how
to make them with PAINT as I did, before I had the luxury of Photoshop.

Adding color, adding shading. Light to dark. Lets get started on the dude getting blasted by ice.
What color should he be? Since he is from mars, let's make him green.

Lets start by Double-Clicking on the color green.

Click on "Define Custom Colors>>"
Then by moving the arrow, you can rapidly select your color, making it get lighter or darker.
Move down to dark. Color the border of our mars dude with this darker green.

Now go back to your color selection and move the arrow up, to make the darker green, slightly lighter.
Then do another layer. Then move the arrow up again, and so fourth.

Now the dude should look like this:


Now select light blue, and use the same meathod as before. Go in layers, get creative.
One layer at a time, and move the arrow up a little each and every time to make the ice a lighter shade of blue as you go up.

Now that the ice is filled in, we are all done! Look at how cool that looks! Now we have an (Oversized for tut)
ice rush sprite (possibily).

We did it, all by ourselves. We made our own sprite without using the same stolen sprite that was leeched countless times.
We can be creative and unique now instead of being like everyone else and leeching what gliomaru already made.

Yay for us! Now its time to start making more sprites, mabye I dont want JUST spell sprites. Mabye I want skill sprites
or prayer sprites or perhaps Side-Icon sprites! The possibilitys are endless when you learn to do it yourself!

Save it as a PNG and tamper with your sprite untill it can be used in your client.
