    Trying to connect to my friends server and I keep getting stuck at Checking for Updates - 2%
    Other people are able to connect and it's online, so it's something on my end.

    I'm able to connect to other 666 servers, this is the only one that I can't

    using java version 1.8.0_191
    It stops download the cache at 15KB (I assume the problem is this)

    From what I can tell the issue is on my side as other people can connect fine, does anyone have any ideas on stuff I should try? Already re-installed java, tried different versions of it as well.

    Not really a fix for the problem at hand, but ask the friend to send you the cache so you can place it yourself rather than downloading the cache

    i'm assuming it has a automatic cache updater etc so it might just auto update afterwards unless there is a problem with the host of the download

    Won't help, if it's not sending the cache it's a networking problem, not a cache loading problem.

    Check your firewall or anti-virus, try running it via a command line and see if it throws any errors.

    I have all firewall and anti-virus disabled.
    Running it via command line seems to have worked, but also outputs this in the prompt.

    Note all the cache is downloaded now and trying to use the .jar still results in stalling at 2% updating.

    Created a simple .bat file to workaround, but still interested in what the problem is.

    That errors related from running from cmd, there's a fix for your friend for that here

    As for the original error, sounds like a java issue, could try uninstalling your java version and reinstalling a new/different/old one
