A Jmod said somewhere (can't remember where exactly) they will continue using Java for their servers, as they are already highly optimised and they didn't want the extra workload to convert to another language.
From a business point of view, for many years, Jagex's main selling point has been that you can "play anywhere", go on any random computer and log in from any old browser....
Somehow I can't help but think this is the start of the end of Runescape
edit : i dont even code so skipped all the coding posts
zomg pls dont reverse engineer assembly
OT: It's about time they changed, but I don't like them also blaming Java for their own incompetence. Java has been perfectly capable of doing a lot of the things which they claim weren't possible, such as water reflections, bump mapping (the material system in general) and more.
Hex-Rays decompiler produces C pseudocode, which is in no way anywhere near suitable for using to disassemble an application to C source. The pseudocode it produces is only suitable for getting a rough idea of what does what, and it frequently gets things massively wrong (as I remember, function parameters are nearly never correct).
No, The future of modding the RS client is (I believe) going to be in-process memory modifying or patching the binary, same as WoW. Hoping to obtain the source for a native application via disassembling is a terribly naive idea. I don't think that's been successfully accomplished once on a game, let alone one as big as RuneScape? Anyway, we'll see.
