    Introduction

Hello Rune-Server! You may not know me, I'm not a very active member of this community in terms of posting replies etc.. but I do try to be active by reading topics and occasionally posting my opinion as a reply.
Anyway, let's get on with it! The reason the title of this topic is so cryptic, is because I'll try and cover a lot of different subjects that are related, and hope to help you understand what they are and what they do.

Who can benefit from this topic

    • Server owners looking for a designer/developer/...
    • Web developers and -designers that are not sure what they want to branch out on
    • People looking to get their site ranking boosted or site experience increased

The Different Members of a Web Application Development Team

    Font-End

Front-end development is development that does not involve a server-side interpreter. I'm talking about HTML, CSS, Javascript, Flash, Images and all that stuff. If you're looking for someone to create a landing page with a button to PLAY NOW and a button to GO TO FORUMS then this is something that a front-end developer would do.

A front-end developer is a creative, organised and fast guy that can create a WOW experience when a user first looks at your website. He can give people the vibe and create a beautiful front-end experience for both users and staff.

Note: Some CMS and blog systems refer to the front-end as the user-viewed website, and the back-end as the administrator-viewed website (the admincp, ..) THIS IS WRONG. A front-end developer can design and create static back-end applications (although they are not useful since they are completely static). You will need a front-end DESIGNER to design an administrative control panel.

    Back-End

Back-end development is development that does involve a server-side interpreter. A back-end developer knows a programming language that can communicate with the webserver to perform requests and parse data, etc... A back-end developer knows a server-side programming language (like PHP, Java, C and variants, ASP.NET, Ruby, Python, ...) He should also know HTML and CSS. Naturally, a back-end developer knows Javascript and can make use of it to create dynamic applications that use AJAX or similar.

On a side note, a back-end developer can be artistic and know how to design websites, but often this is not the case. Front-end and back-end developers can work together to create a unique and responsive application that has both intuitive design and great code behind it all.

    Developer

Although we've already touched on the subject, a developer is someone that knows a programming language. Be it server-side or client-side (back-end or front-end, respectively). He uses his knowledge in the language to develop either the server-side or the client-side of a web application.
    Developers can be designers.

    Designers

A designer is someone that is artistic. He can create sleek, cool-looking, funny, amazing, candy-like, astonishing designs using (most likely) some sort of interface designing application like Photoshop, GIMP, Fireworks, InDesign, Illustrator, Flash, etc.. He knows stuff like the AIDA-principle and uses it effectively in his design. He is able to leave notes with his design to help aid himself (if he is also the front-end developer) or the front-end developer of the project when they turn the design into actual code. REMEMBER THIS, designers!

    Testers

Testers come in different variations. You have the tester that is the back-end developer and knows Test Driven Development, meaning he's doing the testing himself, or it can be another person that knows how to handle the debugger. A tester is someone that has a clear mind and thinks outside of the box. His mind is filled with thoughts on how to sabotage applications in any way possible and is able to put his ideas into code or work with Algorythmic thinking and put it to a test. He can easily find mistakes and errors in applications and think logical to exploit them!
He has good communication and collaboration skills to work with the back-end developer on fixing these errors so the application can be released.

    UX or User Experience

User Experience is a term that was introduced late 2011. Basically, a User Experience designer thinks about how a user would interpret the application and intuitively changes the layout or design of the application to increase usability for users. The UX designer is someone with some basic front-end language knowledge that aims to make applications accessible to the biggest audience possible. He doesn't mind going the extra mile to make sure a page is responsive for someone on a mobile android browser and has a fixed pattern that he uses with every application, to make sure the user experience is maxed out!

    SEO or Search Engine Optimization

SEO has been around ever since google started. SEO is one of the most high-payed parts of web applications as it can turn an app into a success or a failure really easily.
The SEO guy is a geek. He spends his life searching for every variable the google algorythm keeps in mind when indexing and ranking pages. He knows how to make pages score high on search results and quotes -what seems to be- a ridiculous amount of money for his work. He spends a long time going into and examining an application to make sure it will score good, and his excellent communication skills will help him bring his advice to the buyer of the application. He can easily explain how or what the buyer should and shouldn't do with the app, in order to make it score even higher.

The SEO guy will use unusual naming conventions and weird names for files and text, not because he's sloppy but because he can think ahead, months from now. He is able to monitor and maintain a web application's google ranking, but will charge for doing so.

    Conclusion
So, there you have it. That's what I believe every web application development team member does. I hope this is an aid to everyone not sure about what they want to become in the field of web application development and to anyone looking for a developer or designer for their project.

If you have any remarks, questions or criticism, please post them below and I will get back to you!

    Kind regards,

    XtZZ

Well, every thread on a forum is informative.. It holds information. I thought it suited here the most because it is related to website development and there is no section really appropriate for it.. Also, what do you mean with the configuration part?

But when a thread is specific to theoretical or based on information and it has a category, it suited their. It's not that we should change it, just pointing out there are specific sections for this.

Basically, I wrote this (even though it's messy and not really to the point) to help all those people looking for forums developers, etc..

The websites and projects here are not sophisticated unless they are written by more experienced members such as Graham, most people who advertise their website practically work on Front-End, I've seen so many websites with faults and leaks it's unbearable how they make money.

I've seen some decent work, though rarily. I was talking about the requests mostly, though.
