Wondering what IDEs you can recommend for older versions of Java such as J2SE 1.4 (2002).

I gave JCreator Pro a shot and it's just annoying to use at this point.

(Not sure if this is the correct section to post this. )

BlueJ was really popular for beginners back in the day, they have all their release versions back to like 1999 on their site. You'll have to look through to see which java version for the specific release, but they are there for download.

They don't offer downloads all the way back to 1999.

Jesus, I remember in my college course my professor made us use that. It was horrific coming from eclipse at the time. Keep in mind this was < 4 years ago...

And sorry, I got no idea @OP.

Is there a reason you need the IDE itself to use such an old version?
If you're just targeting 1.4 you can just use Intellij and set 1.4 as the language and compiler level

I'm trying to make sure some 3D code works with older versions of Java.
I'm trying to get in the mindset as much as possible for what thin lines and tight spaces people had to work with back then.
Essentially making sure the code works on "ancient" systems.

    Fuck my life.
Eclipse only goes back to 2007.

    Christ.
IntelliJ, which I don't even like, only goes back to 2012 (as far as I can see anyway).

Annnnnndddd...... NetBeans only goes back to 2013.

Look for old versions of sun java studio creator, might be available in the repositories of old copies of Solaris

Finding old versions looks tricky, BlueJ was released in 1999 but archive only goes back to 2008 too.

Have you considered just not using an IDE?

Here's a paper from 1998 listing Java IDEs.

[Only registered and activated users can see links. ]

The links within are broken, but it could point you in the right direction; maybe you could find one online somewhere.
