Recreating a Social Media site like Twitter

-First of this does NOT pertain to RSPS what so ever.
-Do not comment if you do not have anything MEANINGFUL to say.

This is not for me, but for my friend who is currently enrolled in a Software Engineering design course.

The goal of this assignment is to recreate a social media website like Twitter.
EDIT: Must run on UNIX server I am pretty sure. He just said amazon server, which I assume will be UNIX.

Their group is somewhat stuck in what language they should use and where to start. Obviously this could be done using PHP and MySQL, but if you don't work with php frequently it can be a pain in the butt. He had stated that they were looking at JavaScript Node as found here [Only registered and activated users can see links. Click Here To Register...]. We were just talking about this over lunch and I said I would help him out to see if I could find anything more effective. I know there are a few highly talented developers on here so I thought I would ask. If you know a good way to accomplish this task please feel free to comment.

After some research I think the best would be to stick with the "Big 3", Phython, Java, Javascript. Opinions?

I edited the original post. It needs to be run on a UNIX server. I have a friend who uses ASP and we talked about it, but ASP cannot be used on UNIX.

Twitter used to use a Ruby-on-rails backend but now they use Java; both stacks can run on UNIX. Don't know what else you need to know since there isn't a lot of information given here.

Was just looking to get some ideas. I think Java + Javascript would be a pretty killer combination and would handle pretty much everything needed.

Twitter was build with Ruby on Rails so the best option would be that. Personally I think it is the best website programming language.

Well, you gotta use a framework so I'd say go with Ruby on Rails(Ruby) or Django (Python)

using a web server that I designed myself to handle my needs, perhaps you could consider doing the same.

wtf. What kinds of needs do you have that any decent webserver software out there can't do?
