It can run it just fine. You'll need to use the downloadable client instead of the webclient because the webclient messes up.
Other games run smooth as well.

I'm considering buying a new laptop for University and Runescape and other games too. so I'm just wondering if the MacBook Pro with Retina Display is able to run Runescape on Highest settings?

Macbooks are build to withstand the heat. I've ran CS:GO, LoL, CoD2, RSPS, RS3, OSRS, TF2, GMod, Portal 2 & D3 all on high/ultra settings with no problems. Macs are build to render a lot of stuff in high detail, hench why it's used by almost every design & production company.
