Build up youth prospects. Slower but much more effective imo. You could try loaning players?

Ended up winning Champions league, in my fourth season with Swansea. Stole a few young Italian and spanish wonderboys (signed from youth team/reserves) and all ended up being awesome players. Won EPL three times, FA twice, Carling cup once, Supercup once.
