I honestly paint on the exact same canvas size you see in my paintings; 500px x 500px.
Also, what size canvas do you use? I know you're supposed to go large, but I don't understand how large. So I was wondering what you use.
As far as software goes, the only program I use is Photoshop. I love photoshop because you can adjust the brush settings to resize easily (and you resize a lot when painting). As far as tips and tricks go, the best thing I can recommend is that you practice a lot as often as you can. When painting, it never hurts to use multiple references in order to get a feel for lines. In the beginning, you can definitely trace as long as you find yourself learning things from it! Create a lot of new layers as well when drawing as it makes the removal of any area you don't like significantly easier. Use multiple colors when drawing as well as it helps to smooth your lines out.
