Would recommend lowering the opacity of the watermark "Sample" text. A small opacity will do just fine in creating an anti-theft.
The texture used within the Tekton text is insanely simple. I think some more time and experimentation could do you well.

To add onto what Chance has already said, the Tekton text itself is quite simple. When you're first creating logos, it's a really solid start to experimenting with those blending options on the layer to see what you can come up with. As of right now, the stroke layer itself is a little bit pixelated looking; an effect that can also be creating using the outer glow option, then just tinkering with the spread, distance, and opacity, that had the customization allowance to make it much smoother. The logo itself also feels a little flat, so I'd suggest experimenting a little with the bevel and emboss options (a personal favorite of mine being the chisel hard) to add a little depth, adjusting the highlight and shadow options as necessary. You can actually get some really, really cool effects that way. The color scheme itself is also a little basic, going with just the very hard shades of gray and the one shade of yellow. You can definitely bring this up a whole other level if you play with some different tones of yellow, going super bright to emphasize areas of light, or darker for shadows.

All in all, not a bad start, but definitely spend a little more time experimenting and learning to see what you can come up with. As these early stages are the most crucial in terms of your development, don't fear venturing a little further into the extremes and seeing what comes of it.

What tools/etc are used to create a good color scheme? I haven't been able to find much yet that doesn't change it to a different solid color, do I have to have multiple layers to do this? Here was my next attempt.

https://www.colourlovers.com/ is a fantastic resource for finding a color scheme if you are having trouble.
Multiple layers are always good to enhance the design. I feel like you just have a LOT of room to explore being so new to the program.

A good color scheme can be created in a variety of ways. If you're feeling a little risque and want very subtle adjustments, you can create clipping masks with soft gradients or even your own brush work on top of the text layer that would then bind directly onto it. In the Blending Options of the layer, you've got the different outer options, like stroke, outer-glow, and drop-shadow which can all be adjusted. If you look much further into the options and click the titles beside their selective boxes, you'll see that you can actually go in and make all sort of adjustments to them, such as color, or depth levels, or strength in general.

To answer your question on a more personal level though, over time you'll come to know second nature what colors work with that. Until then, the website Chance posted is an incredible resource until you're a little more familiar by nature. I'll use multiple layers, sometimes even duplicating the original text layer itself and moving it below, then shifting it slightly and playing around with more of the blending option on that layer. A neat to trick to keep in mind is adjust the fill % of the layer will only affect the original layer itself, not any of the added effects, so it opens up the potential for quite a few unique options. I'm also fond of using the pen tool and situation blur options to further accentuate natural glows or highlight points that may have been created through the bevel and emboss on chisel hard which is a personal favorite of mine when it comes to doing banners.

    Best of luck, dude.
