Hey there, graphics section frequenters (and everyone else).

Over the next little while, I'll be looking to make some changes to the section that I believe will promote growth, or at the very least, shake things up around here. Over the last little while, we've been discussing some directional ideas for the section and its longevity within the not-super official Discord server of this section, so I'm excited to begin putting those into practice. If you're interested in joining the discussion, I'll stick a link below. Anyone is more than welcome to join.

Anyways, to the meat of the post:

    • A lot of the changes we've been discussing within that server have a lot to do with the current operation of the section and the way the competitions have been getting run. It's pretty clear that community interest regarding the SotM competition has been dwindling, so I'll be looking to shake things up a bit by changing the way the competition is run. Following the current voting procession of SOTM #256, I'll be closing down the competition for a one month period while the workings for a new system are established. The new competition will involve a more beneficial vote + critique oriented process for all applicants, so everyone who enters will be receiving direct feedback from members of the designer usergroup. More details on that to come, though, as there's still sort of some ideas up in the air of how we'd like to proceed with that specific competition.

    • I'll also be going through all pre-existing guideline and rule threads within the section and reformatting them to be a little more modern; these guidelines from that point on will then be enforced within the section. As much as members leaving positive comments is appreciated, there's been quite a few comments being posted that don't actually benefit the original poster of the thread. The leniency in which these posts will be tolerated will be gauged in time, but we're aiming to convert the section more into a productive place for people to share their work and receive constructive feedback and less one for pats on the back. Members who're frequently found posting unproductive comments will be given notice and a link to the update critiquing guideline initially, then if they continue to post unproductively, will be addressed accordingly.

    • Additionally, members who've a negative reputation within the community either for ripping the artwork of other people (which will include an updating of the current Hall of Shame) will no longer be welcome to contribute to the section and will be dealt with accordingly. On this note, members who've been found ripping work will be given the opportunity to apologize to the community for their behavior and will be allowed to participate again. I've absolutely no interest in preventing someone from being a part of our little design corner, but I cannot in good faith permit someone to take credit for someone else's work.

    • There has also been steps made towards reforming the Designer Usergroup as a whole, as over time it's fallen to a state of stagnancy in that a lot of the current members of the usergroup are no longer visiting the site or productively contributing to the section. Designers will now be required to meet a certain level of activity, participate within community events, and a few other requirements that're still in the works. More information on that to come at another time, however.

I'm excited for what the future can hold for our section. In time, I imagine we'll be able to bring back the active community we once had where members were able to share work, battle one another, and overall have the section be a lot more productive. Unfortunately this will be a battle more of attrition than being able to suddenly surge activity back into the section, so it's going to be a slow process in time where we're able to bring old members who once visited back, and retain new members for the section. Again, there's been a ton of productive discussion within the Graphics Discord, so I invite anyone who'd like to be a part of it or just hang out to join up. Any and all feedback or questions can be posted within this thread and I'll do my best to clarify on everything that'll be happening in the coming future.

    Thanks!
