It's a much deeper issue than that.
While OSRS is doing well, we'll struggle.
When OSRS fucks up, we'll flurish.
When OSRS dies, we'll boom and then be shut down back to where we are right now.
I respectively disagree, from what the video shows it's just a bunch of killing tasks a maze and an agility course, there's no story, no depth, no charm or character; players do the thing to get the reward. Yet I won't deny that it was well executed, the theme was consistent, even if I don't see the reason for it other than "fire + lava = cool".

I do agree that new rsps players will fluctuate based on osrs popularity, but it's not a zero-sum game, players can play both at once. The reason they don't for long is that the content lifetime of a server is a month or two. RSPS's hook has always been short-term gratification, but server's struggle to keep the majority of players because they make content goal-oriented rather than journey focused. You new minigame is a perfect example of this, I bet players are doing it #1 because it's the new thing #2 to get the reward. After most players have the rewards I expect it'll be dead content because the content itself isn't engaging.

You more than most will have the data, I'd love to see some numbers on the content and player churn rates.

Oldschool is still quite active.. just rs3 is dying I think. I play here and there but not very much. RSPS seems active still but not as much as when i was younger. I jump on ikov every so often which is pretty strong in playerbase.

They're two main issues I see.

The first and main issue stems from RS not being popular anymore. Back in the late 2000s era, WoW offered the premium MMO experience while RS served all of the poor kids looking to play a free game that didn't suck ass. Nowadays (disregarding RS3) OSRS exists as a nostalgia game that lets their aging playerbase play what they've known growing up. If RS is dying, so will RSPS.
The second comes from RSPS not being accessible anymore. When the Mopar client had a 1 click button for starting up a server, any newbie could setup Hamachi to spin up a server with nonsense features that rocked the socks outta any 10 year old. For that time period, a server for derping around was all you needed. Clients also used to be played in browser too before Java removed applets which made it really easy to explore new servers at the click of a button. Nowadays, I'm not gonna trust any of the JARs out there. But in the larger scheme of things, I think innovation is necessary (like mobile RSPS as others have suggested in this thread) if there is ever going to be revival of private servers again.

The age old question. This thread is posted multiple times a year lol, never seems to have any impact upon whether or not RSPS continue to exist / thrive.

    RSPS isn't dying, it's evolving.

This question was asked about runescape when i started playing back in 2001 and then again asked about rsps when i joined mopar not long after it was created.

I still have the same response enjoy it while you can and stop freaking worrying about things you can't change even if it did happen as what if's are irrational and pointless.

Enjoy the things you have while you can because you have more of a chance dying then winning something keep this in mind.
