Need to know if it's worth reading. Been looking for a good book recently and a lot of people suggested it.

Personally you should try out the interactive fiction game based on the book it's really fun. But i will say the newer movies are decent though a book can take your imagination much further than any movie can.

i always read the book before i watch a movie about it because in my opinion the book is usually better.

Depends on where your interests lay on the literary spectrum. If you're into science fiction I would definitely recommend it, the story poses some interesting questions about the universe, life on other planets and how we would interact with them.
However, it does have a rather childish style of storytelling. If you're more interested in the hard stuff, the real mysteries of life and the universe but still seek for an accessible way to understand these ideas, I recommend starting with Carl Sagan.
If you hang somewhere in between those two, I recommend reading Arthur C Clarke.
