Dota, same game that sells tons of custom effects, upgrades, chest passes, and others? That is feeding an addiction for players to buy. LoL i do believe survives on skins, just like FortNite, which also feeds some type of addiction to collect. every game has a form of addiction behind its sales, whether it be skins to collect, or packages in a war game to get a small boost ahead of another, or monthly/weekly subscriptions.
A very interesting discussion you started right here.
In the first place I would say that a player should be able to gamble as much as he/she wants to gamble. I understand that addicted people spend hundreds if not thousands of dollars to keep gambling on your server, and sometimes, you might feel bad for them.
However, if you don't allow them to gamble they will simply go to another server or find another way of gambling outside of the RSPS community. I think the majority of people that spend tons of money to gamble on private servers aren't on your game to play your game, but just to feed their gambling addiction.
It would be very interesting to see what happens if you would completely remove gambling and forbid it. My expectation is that players might last way longer and find other ways to reach a very common goal: be the richest (or atleast one of the richest).
Because yes, you can build up an insane bank without gambling, but it would take litteraly ages.
At the same time I think your server would have a huge fall back donation wise (what you've mentioned), but I'm sure you can develop a system where you can get the same amount of donations if not more (over a longer period).
I think something like this isn't setup in a week or have it fully intergrated when you launch a server. I think it's an iterative proces of testing out things like donation deals, certain monthly memberships on top of donator ranks with extra perks etc. and things like usefull battlepasses (/seasonpasses).
Again, a very interesting topic and I hope that someday a good running or potentional succesful server will take the risk and try this out.
