It's mostly the very high-end games that 8gb isn't enough for. 16gb is enough for literally all games out there nowadays; I personally suggest 16, ram doesn't really cost much and the need for more of it grows with each year that passes.
Yeah exactly it'll just depend on the game. I'd recommend 16 gb ram too but 8 gb is just fine for non-gamers and certainly isn't "shit all."

It's really easy to say that 8gb ram isn't enough if you've never actually had an 8gb ram machine (maybe you have maybe you haven't idk) but I completely disagree with you. I've had 8gb ram on my gaming computer for several years now and I've never had an issue running games or any other applications. In fact, I typically keep Eclipse/IntelliJ, Chrome, Discord, and Skype open while playing Fortnite, PUBG, Overwatch, or any other game. And lol minimum of 16 gb, no. Anything over 16gb is actually just way overkill.

Sure, if money isn't an issue or whatever, 16 gb ram is all good but don't phrase it as though "8 gm ram is shit all"
I have 16 chrome tabs open (1 youtube, 1 dailymotion - both inactive) and shit all else open on my laptop and this is my ram usage. (Non-gamer btw).

I do small amounts of programming, basic stuff really as its not my profession so will use IntelliJ a bit. I'm into DevOps so mainly just need a good machine that has a unix based command line, so having insane specs isn't massively important. On the other hand I could also just dual boot a Windows PC and have Ubuntu on it.

I've heard that Macs tend to last longer, not sure if that's true or not tho. With Macs the standard is 128GB SSD which would probably be fine as I don't store much, not sure about updating to an i7 or 16GB of RAM is needed either.
I currently have the 15" touch bar mac pro. Spent over $4300 on it when it first came out, definitely beats any windows laptops on the market. Obviously not specs wise, but just the feel and vibe you get from it doing anything. I know you said 13" mac but I'm sure it's the same just different size. Definitely go with the mac, I'm talking from experience. Plus i think the battery life on the mac is 10x better than any windows.

I've got a macbook air, as well as a Windows Desktop. For obvious reasons, my desktop is much more powerful, and each of my devices serve different purposes. I prefer my mac for convenience, it's extremely user friendly, and is great for browsing, running basic programs, and my air has really good battery life. However, if you at any point plan on gaming on your laptop, I would stay away from mac. Durability, security, and user-friendliness, I would have to recommend mac for a laptop

P.S. Just don't buy their phones, they design them to break every 1-2 years. Even though I have one.
