    Hey,

    Quick question for any of you law buffs. I created a desktop application for Mac OSX with the following purpose;

    • In the background, using the Youtube-MP3.ORG converter, convert a YouTube URL to MP3. Then automatically add that MP3 to the iTunes library. Using AppleScript, invoke iTunes to play the song.

    Libraries used
    • htmlunit
    • apache-commons
    • apache-lang
    • apache-io
    • apache-logging

    Questions
    • Is it illegal to use Youtube-Mp3.ORG's webpage to programatically convert non-copyright songs from a url in the background?
    • Is it illegal to operate my application for personal use?
    • Is it illegal to distribute my application to a few close friends?

Their website says their service is completely free to use, so I don't see why it wouldn't be legal for you to utilize. However, if you're concerned you could always email the owner using the provided contact page on the site.

I wouldn't think so, I mean it is personal use and it's not like your distributing. You've already stated it's for non-copyright use.

Once again, I wouldn't think so - depending on what they download. Their website simply downloads the file from YouTube, so I guess the real concern should be to the file hosts themselves and not you and/or friends.

Could be wrong, just giving my input on what I believe to know.

I appreciate the input, I thought of contacting them directly but wasn't able to find the link until now!

Definitely legal, as long as there isnt anything else in your application that would limit its ability to be distributed (e.g. copyrighted code or images)

Unfortunately none of my colleagues and peers are lawyers so I can't ask a lawyer unless I want to pay for the service. I may have to go down that road if I don't get a definitive answer! Thanks.

All of the libraries used are included in the HtmlUnit API so i'll have to find out what license that is under. Thanks for the input Major.

In the United States, and in some other countries seeking legal guidance doesn't cost you anything. If you want to open a case, or can't find the answer online on one of the many legal forums.. call a lawyers office and ask if they have an appointment explain what your question is and they'll most likely tell you 1. you need to come in for a appointment and it'll either cost you XYZ amount for a legal assistance query (like if you want to file a lawsuit, you'll most likely be charged for their time..) or they'll say yeah, come in to the office and we can look further into your question (99% of the time, this will not cost you anything) 2. They'll give you a definitive answer over the phone (or in some cases, you can even e-mail them.)

I'm not saying it'll be free in every circumstance, but most lawyers love potential clients so they'll answer questions regarding a law or a legal issue free of charge.

Asking your question on a legal forum might be a good option for you as well.
