Alright so... I had a problem with a fake antivirus a few days ago (Win 7 Home Security 2011) and ever since then Windows has been telling me Bit Defender and Microsoft Security Essentials are disabled (even though MSE is enabled).

Does anyone know how I can fix this? I'm sure I got rid of the virus, but I'm guessing this is some sort of after effect.

I can temporarily fix it by updating its virus signature database, but as I said... that's only temporary.

Well, I think you should ignore the comments and uninstall BitDefender. Try Avast Antivirus. You can do anything with the virus, deleting, moving to quarantaine, etc.

I don't use BitDefender in the first place. I use MSE.

Try disabling/deleting/uninstalling that one. If that didn't work, try Google to know what the error may be.

Already tried that. It's a temporary fix.

Have you had a look in the registry files?

Wipe the disk and re-install Windows. That's the only way you're going to be completely sure that you've got rid of all the malicious stuff you know and don't know about.

I feared I was going to get this answer. Sigh. I guess there's no helping it, I'll do it soon. Thanks, Graham.

lol, makes me laugh. Run the following programs, combofix, malawarebytes, spybot, run a virus scan with your default program, run a program called adaware and then use ccleaner which will clean all of your temporary files and registry. Im a Microsoft Pro so trust me.
    Regards, Shadow.
