Prologue
Just recently completely wiped an old Toshiba Laptop of mine, which was running Windows 7. It wasn't running slow just wasn't the speed and heard that your could speed up an older laptop with Linux. After researching a couple distributions I decided with Xubuntu 12.04. Reason being was because it was the most lightweight and user friendly that had an appealing GUI; Which can be completely debatable.
Synopsis
Overall: 7.5 out of 10
Experience Level: 5 out of 10
Summary: Xubuntu 12.04 has a friendly GUI and features a lightweight Operating System that is swift, sleek, and professional and suites nearly anybodies needs. You can browse the web with some of the fastest speeds using Google Chrome, develop a programs with common IDE's like Eclipse, create documents and spreadsheets with LibreOffice, and even create graphics with GIMP.
Breakdown
Various versions of Xubuntu can be installed at Xubuntu . Xubuntu 12.04 is considered the LTS (Long Term Service) version meaning you should have no problems receiving support with any of your problems.
I chose to burn the image to a disc and boot from the BIOS since my laptop wasn't compatible with USB boot. Besides the troublesome of finding out that my computer wasn't compatible with USB boot, Xubuntu's installation is a piece of cake. It's nearly identical to Unbuntu's with a few other modifications and took about five minutes.
You'll most likely have some updates to install upon your first log in; Which I highly advise you do as it will increase your performance. You'll notice it has a traditional desktop with trash bin and file systems that you can browse on the desktop. Xubuntu has a similar feel to Windows, expect by default the bar is at the top, where you can view your programs by the 'Start' button. You'll also have quick access to applications by moving your mouse towards the bottom of the screen and up will come a Mac OS type bar. The overall interface can be completely customized.
Xubuntu has Unbuntu's software manager. Which minimizes the use of the terminal for new Linux users. That being said the terminal is not removed and applications can be installed from there if you know the commands. Xubuntu doesn't come with any third party applications like Java or Flash which can be found either online and installed within the terminal or the software manager.
Pro's

Spoiler for Xubuntu GUI:
under ''limited gaming'' , what games does it limit or is it just in general you cannot play games properly.
Most of the mainstream games are developed for Windows therefore can be played through a Windows Emulator like Wine. You're able to play various Java based games along with the couple hundred games listed on Steam here.
