Hey, I'm looking to upgrade some components in my PC for a better general performance experience.

I'm not looking to switch out the motherboard, so, what could I possibly upgrade to improve the general performance?

Here's the information of the PC.

    and

i7-7700k, this will be the best upgrade you can do without changing motherboards. I did read somewhere that people did manage to get coffee lake working on kaby lake motherboards read more here: https://www.extremetech.com/g00/comp...a=1&i10c.dv=14

if this is actually possible then you can get a 8700k

I would strongly recommend an upgrade to the processor and graphics card. Beyond that, upgrades are mostly a matter of preference - faster or high capacity RAM or storage, aesthetics, liquid cooling versus air cooling, etc. I am going to piggy-back off of what was previously said for a moment,

To my knowledge, Coffee Lake was never intended to work with the 170 and 270 chipsets due to inconsistencies with power delivery, which caused over- and under-supply of power and damaged processors during some of this testing. I would only recommend sinking the money into an 8700k if you are willing to risk voiding the warranty and not getting a free replacement.

I use the i7 7700k with a Z270-E and love the power it delivers. I have never really had trouble with performance, outside of the occasional heat issue, which is inevitable in Intel's territory. The no-holds-barred, higher-budget upgrade path ultimately leads to an i7, but for a generous middle ground, I might suggest the i5 7600k, but at a current price point of about $240, you might as well spend the extra $100 for an i7.

Why regress to previous releases, even after OP stated that he did not want to switch the motherboard out? In addition to requiring outdated parts, the performance of the 4790 doesn't even stack up to that of the i5 7600k, which the user would not need to switch the motherboard out for. The 4790 and Maximus Hero were fantastic components in their day, but they are very quickly outperformed by modern components.

Additionally, a GTX 970 is now more costly due to low supply than a GTX 1070, and the most 970 cards cannot even match the performance of the standard 1060 models.
