Excuse me if this is the wrong section - feel free to move it.

I'm still relatively new to RSPS (I've been around for a while, but never been involved in private servers per se), so I've got a question:
Does the location of the game server actually matter? I remember a while back, people were saying to host a private server in the Netherlands - is this true, and does it actually make a difference? The game server would be hosted separately from the website and file server, so wouldn't be distributing RuneScape assets (though I doubt that'll make a difference in the legal side)

People say host your server in netherlands because of the copyright laws lol but it doesnt really matter tbh, if jagex wants to target you then you're screwed anyway
Hosting location probably matters in terms of latency, i'd recommend hosting it in the region of which most of your players are based

That's what I figured, but I wanted to ask people who knew more about this subject than me. Thanks!

    Hello Belz,

Usually you want to host somewhere in Europe.

My understanding to as of why could be wrong, but here's why I think you should host in Europe.

From what I've seen a majority of N.A players have a decent strong internet connection and have no problem playing a Europe server.
A lot of players in Europe have a poor internet connection (from what I've seen, of course not everyone does) and it's best to make things fast for the majority of the players.

If you do choose to host in N.A I'd recommend an east-coast based server.

The only way to defeat the culprit of location is to have multiple worlds in multiple countries, however not many people choose to do this as it's costly and not many have the knowledge to create multiple world servers.

As per the NL argument: that's false. If a large corporation wanted you down, they'd make sure if it. Regardless of copyright laws or not.

If you have further questions, feel free to private message me and I'll gladly help answer your questions.

edit: I'd also like to note the cost of bandwidth and IP's typically cost more in N.A, so if you're trying to go for a route that'll save some bills in the wallet, Europe would be the way to go.

Hosting multiple worlds wouldn't be an issue from a code perspective as I've already written the support for it, obviously the determining factor would be whether it's worthwhile for the size of the player base You raise a good point about the internet speeds, so that'll be something to think about. I was originally planning on going with Hyperfilter for hosting, but I'll shop around and do some research, and gather some insight from friends and people who've ran RuneScape servers in the past.
